The Quintessential NYC Fabric Shop…and much, much more!

The Broadway Silk Store has been in our family for generations.  We are so old that we don’t know exactly how old we are! What we do know is that the store has been around over 80 years and was a wedding gift from my Great Uncle Eli to my Great Aunt Esther, who ran the business until she was 85! Family lore claims my uncle, previously a carpenter, built all the shelving single handedly.  We take great pride in the fact the store maintains it’s original interior decorated with family antiques, including a typewriter, sewing machine and a gigantic reel-to-reel tape recorder.

When the store opened during the Depression a “silk store” was a high end fabric vendor.

Although today we no longer specialize in silk we offer a wide variety of fabric selections including, cotton, linen, upholstery tapestries, satin, microfibers and notions.  We offer the personalized touch for our clients who range from individuals creating DIY crafts, home decorating and sewing projects to professional film studios and theater companies. We have also updated to include an eclectic variety of quirky gift items including jewelry, accessories and home goods, many of which are crafted by local artists.

We are the quintessential Mom and Pop store, now in its 4th generation offering the personal touch.  We love exchanging ideas with our customers who often come in with a vague concept or a picture on their phone that they are inspired by.  Our goal is to help you achieve your creative concepts and we love seeing pictures of the final results

“You all are an icon of my Astoria childhood--I gazed into the Silk Store's windows daily as I walked from 35th Street to Precious Blood School, always admiring how beautifully draped those prints were. So much variety! And inside, the creaking wood floors, the array of fabrics...a reliable institution. Decades later, I reside on an island in Maine, and I co-own a fabric shop. It's amazing how much kinship I feel with your displays, your philosophy...we also have old family pics and memorabilia around our shop! As shopowners, we are all supporters of memory art, of family treasures, of skills and handcrafts that are timeless, handed down. And this is a glowing tribute to that. I love it--thank you!!”
